The feed industry is looking for new, safe and natural raw materials to support animal health and wellbeing. Studies show that peat supports the wellbeing of animals and improves their growth performance. Neova’s product development has focused on finding out the differences between different types of peat and identifying the optimal peat suitable for feed use.
Animal welfare is a megatrend
Animal welfare is emphasized in European Union legislation. Animal welfare and the responsible use of antibiotics are supported, for example, by the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy. The aim is to reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock farming without compromising animal health. There is a growing demand for responsible feed alternatives, so that the use of human-edible food as feed decreases and at the same time farmland can be freed up for food production
Peat-based animal feed products to support animal welfare
Peat is a natural material that has unique properties in supporting the intestinal wellbeing of animals. Neova’s product development has identified a peat quality that is particularly suitable for feed use and feeding trials have shown its suitability especially for piglets. The special peat for feed contains carbohydrates beneficial for intestinal microbes and several useful bioactive compounds. Our latest product is also suitable for environmental enrichment use encouraging natural behaviours of pigs and satisfying their natural need, for example, to foraging, which supports the animals’ wellbeing.
In collaboration in the feed market
Neova has launched its first peat-based animal feed product in collaboration with Hankkija Oy, a company part of the Danish Agro group. ProHumi, made of special feed quality peat, is developed for pig feed and environmental enrichment material use, and the use of ProHumi will be later expanded to other animal groups. The manufacturing of ProHumi has started in a pilot scale at the Neova’s Ilomantsi production plant. The intention is to expand production in the future and invest in new production technology.

In feed product development, Neova invests in the high quality and hygiene level of production and raw materials, responding to customer needs with new, innovative products.
